Alastair Cook inspires cricket stars from across the David Ross Education Trust
Eleven lucky students from across the David Ross Education Trust had the incredible opportunity to attend a cricket training session with England batsman, Alastair Cook CBE, at Lord's Cricket Ground.
Following the talent and commitment they have shown during Trust-wide and county competitions, students from Loughborough’s Charnwood College, Grimsby’s Humberston Academy, Spilsby’s King Edward VI Academy, Corby’s Lodge Park Academy and Northampton’s Malcolm Arnold Academy were selected to meet and train with Alastair, who in 2016 became the youngest player to score 10,000 test runs.
As part of the event, Alastair spent time helping the cricket hopefuls to work on their batting skills, as well as sharing stand-out moments from his extraordinary career during a special question and answer session.
Sam Middleditch, a student at Humberston Academy, said: “Meeting Alastair Cook was a great experience and I have learnt so much from the nets session with him.”
Students also received an exclusive tour of Lord’s Cricket Ground, which is known as the Home of Cricket, where they had the chance to explore the players’ dressing rooms, museum and visit the iconic Long Room.
Tom Adlington, a student at King Edward VI Academy, said: “The nets session with Alastair Cook was amazing! Being able to bat against my sporting hero is an experience I will never forget.”
This incredible opportunity, which was made possible through the David Ross Education Trust’s Inspiration Fund, is just one example of many events on offer as part of the Trust’s pioneering enrichment programme that aims to motivate and encourage young people to develop their talents and discover their passions.
Shane Ward, Head of Sports Enrichment at the David Ross Education Trust, said: “This truly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students. Not many people can say that they have trained alongside one of England’s finest batsmen.
“We are delighted that our students were able to spend time learning from Alastair, with thanks to the support of the David Ross Education Trust’s Inspiration Fund. Everyone was in awe of Alastair’s achievements and I hope that this experience will encourage our students to aim high and continue to strive for success in all they do.”
